The Story

When a garden is allowed to go a little bit wild, a window of freedom is created. Nature can bolt out the gate before you know it and what she gives you is the sheer vitality of life.

Colours clash. There is boldness and extravagance and abundance that makes you realise how much beauty there is to witness.

Grandiflora is a celebration of this wild abundance — the garden at full tilt. Those periods of beauty and bounty when nature gives us a glimpse into her world and the power it has over us.

Flowers and fruit are gathered from the garden and orchard at the height of their season and photographed in the studio. They are composed against backgrounds gathered from rustic and domestic urban spaces, bringing the vitality of the natural world into the places we live.

The abundance is deliberate. The flowers are allowed to crowd one another, fruit fills the table and colour doesn't always behave itself. I want these works to hold onto something of what happens when nature is given a little freedom — that extraordinary sense of life spilling over.

Wild abundance · seasonal bounty · the vitality of life
